Kryston Heavy Metal Extra - 08/06/2009
Could the new Kryston Heavy Metal Extra actually improve on the original rig putty? Well, JASON UMNEY thinks so. Here’s why…
There can’t be many anglers who didn’t own a pot of the original Heavy Metal. In the light of its undoubted success, why change the recipe? Well, Dave Chilton, headman at Kryston, decided that, rather than rest on his laurels, he could actually improve the product. The new Heavy Metal Extra is appreciably tackier to the touch than the original. Dave told me that this is one of the main things that the tweaking of the recipe has achieved. It’s now so tacky when warm that it adheres even better to whatever you’re using it on. If you twist some between your fingers along a piece of braid, you can coat the whole link in a thin layer of putty – quite an edge when you’re looking to keep things pinned down flat. I love the way that you can heat the putty between your fingers and mould it with ease before dipping it into the lake to ‘set’ it where you put it. The new version is heavier than ever. In fact, its weight is comparable to lead, which means that you need to use less of it. It’s non-toxic and reusable, of course, which means that if you’re as tight as me, you can nick all the bits of putty back off old hook links!
Heavy Metal Extra has been made available in green, brown and original grey colours, all of which blend nicely with a number of different lake beds. I can’t find a fault with this stuff and I think that it’s set to be at least as popular as the original Heavy Metal, which is some recommendation.
